When designing a career, we often get caught up in practical issues such as skill sets, career niches, and target companies while ignoring key personal issues. I approach career development using a form of self-inquiry that asks my clients to look inward to find out what they want from their lives and careers. I want to know about their joys, their hopes, their most personal aspirations.
However, there are two additional questions I never fail to ask. The first is “What motivates you?” The second is “What do you fear most in your life?” I could give you my rationale for asking such questions. But today I won’t. Instead, I’ll ask you to ponder each question and come up with your own rationale for why they are important. If you spend some time with these questions, you will learn much about your essential self.
