Pittsburgh has and is characterized by the strong interconnections between city and county government, business and union interests, and the concentration of wealth within its philanthropic community. These connections have nurtured and strengthened strong relationships among the leaders within these constituencies. The renaissance periods where these people came together to revitalize the region were the direct result of a joint commitment and consensus to achieve a common set of goals.
What implications does this have for the man or woman who seeks employment in the region? Well, the saying “It’s not what you know, but who you know” certainly holds true for Pittsburgh and its surrounding suburbs. The traditional emphasis in career development has been on “hunting” for jobs out there in the marketplace. The job seeker would be better served to reframe his or her approach and master the art and science of “farming” relationships that will uncover opportunities in the hidden job marketplace. I will speak more on this topic in my next post.
