The reason most job seekers don’t find success submitting resumes and cover letters via email or snail mail is because their material is filtered out before it ever reaches the decision-maker who can hire them. I counsel my clients to be very selective in sending resumes, using this approach only when they are convinced they are an excellent match for the job opening.
The key to penetrating the hidden job market in Pittsburgh is to master the art of the informational interview. In my previous post, I asked you to build, manage and cultivate your personal and business network and ask network members to identify and connect you with decision-makers in your target companies. Be sure to emphasize to your network members that you are truly seeking information and will not, under any circumstances, “hit on” the decision-maker for a position. This makes for a more relaxed situation for both your friend and the decision-maker; it takes the pressure off each of them. The decision-maker will more likely be open to your following up and scheduling a meeting with him/her. Your next step is to prepare yourself for the informational interview.
