My clients master informational interviewing to reach their career goals. For the person seriously considering a career change, s/he will have identified serveral career options through my Life-Work Discovery model. However, these options must be examined in detail before a final choice is made. The decision must be based on more than intellectual scrutiny; it must have an experiential base.
If you fit this profile, you must meet and interview the people who have achieved success in the very career niches you are currently focused on. You want to interview winners! You want to know what credentials you need for this niche, what strategies you need to employ to succeed. You also need to discover what the challenges are. No job is without its challenges. It’s good to know what your interviewee loves about her job; it’s just as important to discover what she dislikes about that job. You need to ask probing questions that will give you a “felt sense” of the profession. Only then will you know if her career is right for you.
