Saleen Ghubril is not a man who’s afraid of a challenge. As the new Executive Director of The Pittsburgh Promise, he is charged with raising $15 million by June 30, 2009 so that 1000 graduating high school seniors will have scholarship money to pursue their college education.
Created in December 2007 through The Pittsburgh Foundation with a $100 million commitment from UPMC, the program is charged with reforming public education, creating safer neighborhoods, and generating college scholarship funds for graduating high school seniors. UPMC donated $10 million to help 2008 graduates. The $90 million balance is in the form of a challenge grant intended to generate an additional $135 million. I will have more to say on this exciting program in tomorrow’s posting.
