Sometimes the best laid retirement plans are changed by circumstances. Sometimes individuals and couples simply have a change of heart.
Several years ago, I worked with a couple to explore how they wanted to live out their retirement. She wanted to volunteer and travel. He wanted to establish a consulting practice and apply his corporate and six sigma experience with major corporations in the greater Pittsburgh area. Neither wanted to relocate.
Several months after we’d finished our work together, he called me to tell me they’d purchased a home on a golf community in the Carolinas. He’d given up his idea for a consulting gig, instead opting for golfing and the leisure life. He’d changed his plans to accommodate a passion (golf) instead of the compulsion to make more money when their lifestyle did not require it. His wife could still volunteer and indulge their joint desire for travel.
